Today’s mother and son
team of Tropic Sun Bakers are lovingly carrying on a family
tradition that swept the Caribbean by storm back in 1936
when their founder, great grandmother, sold her first
Black Cake in Jamaica, BWI.
Caribbean Rum Fruitcake –
or, Black Cake – had long been the centerpiece of
weddings and celebrations of all kinds throughout the
islands when great grandma decided that her Black Rum
Cake was too wonderful for only special occasions. She
declared every day a holiday and went into her kitchen
to revolutionize the fine art of creating exquisite cakes.
Word got around fast and in
no time, islanders were clamoring for great grandma’s
Black Rum Fruitcake which was setting new standards for
the “black diamond of the Caribbean”. Before
long, business was booming, so great grandma’s daughter
joined her in creating magic from their treasured and
carefully guarded family recipe. The customer list continued
to grow.
Great grandma’s granddaughter
expanded the product line when she came to mainland USA
with the introduction of Red Velvet Cake, long savored
throughout the southern states as the special surprise
cake for all occasions. Just a few years later this lady’s
son became the fourth generation participant in this delightful
business of distributing joy in a cake tin. Today mother
and son are branching out with other delectable cakes
and sweet rolls, all baked with the finest, freshest,
some-still-secret magical ingredients – and love. |
